DAKAR DECLARATION– Senegal, 1998

DECLARATION OF THE MOVEMENT OF WORKING CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS OF AFRICA, LATIN AMERICA AND ASIA, GATHERED IN DAKAR (Senegal) FROM THE 1st OF MAY TO THE 4th OF MAY 1998

In our meeting we highlighted the following subjects:

DEBATE ABOUT THE NEW CONVENTION

We ask to the International Labour Office to take part to the next Conference, taking place in Geneva, in order to express our opinion about the new Convention’s project dealing with “intolerable forms” of child employment.

We are against prostitution, slavery and drug dealing, which involve children.

Everyday we fight against dangerous works and against children exploitation. Likewise, we work to improve life and work conditions of all minors in the world.

We wish that one day all the children of the world had the right to decide whether working or not.

Work shall be adequate to capacity and degree of growth of any child and not dependent on age.

INITIATIVES AND POLICY  ABOUT CHILD WORK

Child work movement shall be consulted in decisions concerning work. If a decision must be taken, let us take it together.

We will not take part to the Global March against child work, because its promoters do not consider our position and because we cannot march against our work.
