December 9th, 2009
Today, there are around 218 million working children in the world (source: ILO). Some of these children work in unacceptable conditions. Others work in decent conditions, normally doing indispensable work helping in the home, or in the informal sector in order to pay their school fees and those of their siblings.
In the World Meeting of Working Children’s Movements from Asia, Africa, and Latin America, that took place in October, 2006 in Siena, the delegates present once again claimed their right to receive greater attention by institutions and adults, and to be recognised as protagonists capable of contributing to making a better society to live in. For this reason, in the closing ceremony of the Meeting, they voted in favour of declaring the 9th of December the “World Day of Working Children”.

This is a particularly important date for the Movement, because on the 9th of December, 1996, in Kundapur (India), a long process was started that led the organisations of working children to found the World Movement, of which Italianats is a part.

In respect of the decisions made in Siena, on occasion of the 9th of December, 2007, ItaliaNATs (NATs = Niños y Adolescentes Trabajadores), invites all who believe in the need to improve the conditions in which working children live, to print and distribute the postcard of the second WORLD DAY OF WORKING CHILDREN.
4th World day of Working Children and Youth wants to highlight the important contribution of Movements WC&Y to the fight against poverty.
Through their work, combined with school and recreation, WC&Y support their families and fight for their rights, against injustice, exploitation and trafficking,
Aware that education is key to improving life chances.
