There were invited guests from Germany, Australia, Finland and Italy. For two weeks delegates worked from morning till evening in plenary sessions, work groups and commissions, to assess activities during the last three years, and to set 7 objectives for the next 5 years. They refreshed themselves for some moments, and celebrated their 12th anniversary of their Movement in a grand style.
- Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony was presided by the Minister of Labor and Social Security of Burkina Faso in the presence of high governmental and diplomatic personalities, as well as the partners of AWCY/Burkina and AMWCY (ILO, Enda TM, Plan, Save the Children, UNICEF). In a hall which was full, young children sang and two WCY delegates traced the history of the AMWCY and mentioned their expectations at this meeting.
More than 20% of the cost of organization of the 7th meeting was obtained from the local offices of Plan, Save the Children, and UNICEF,… These funds were notably used to play host to the 150 participants during two weeks.
- Le Ministre du Travail inaugure la "maison des EJT du Burkina"
After having presided the opening ceremony of the meeting, The Minister of Labor and Social Security of Burkina Faso inaugurated the Youth Centre of the Burkina Working Children and Youth in the presence of all the participants. This centre, constructed by its Ministry, cost forty million F CFA. It will be equipped by ILO/IPEC at a sum of about sixteen million francs CFA.
The construction of "this centre of WCY" shows that the AWCY of Burkina, has, with time, acquired a wide capacity of partnership with its authorities and international partners. AWCY/Burkina, through a speech by its president, considered this center as the gift for the 12th Anniversary of AMWCY. He expressed all his gratitude to the Minister for this beautiful center offered by his Ministry to the WCYs.
- The WCYs assess their efforts over a three-year period and holds a press briefing
During the meeting, the WCYs assessed their activities during the last three years through the exchange of experiences and the submission of activity rapports from the different member countries and held a press briefing. In this report, it was noted that the AMWCY spread to 16 new towns in 2006. Therefore from 2003 to 2006, the AMWCY moved from 64 to 82 towns.
There has been an improvement in the respect of rights, notably in education, leisure activities, listening and respect for working children.
The WCYs have improved in the elaboration and implementation of national activity plans, the establishment and strengthening of national coordinations; animation of radio broadcasts enabled them to reach more and more people. Training has helped to develop new activities and start new income generating activities.
Their partnership with the local and international institutions has progressed; they participate in governmental decisions concerning them.
In villages where they led activities against early migration and child trafficking, they have recorded a remarkable reduction in early migration of children from villages to towns. They also established listening centres in several towns.
On Saturday, 15 July 2006, they held a press briefing to present their report to journalists, thus using the media as a way of sharing with the people and working children who were unable to participate in the meeting.
- WCYs against AIDS
In most countries, the WCYs organized sensitization campaigns on infectious diseases which threaten people’s health.
During the introductions and discussions among groups, it appeared that the WCYs organized detection test sessions on STI/AIDS and tuberculosis for the grassroots groups.
"Fortunately, reports Tounkara from Guinée Conakry, results in our country have been negative for all, this could be read on the faces because everybody was smiling when the results were received!" There could be no better news!
- Training workshops at the 7th meeting
The WCYs held training workshops facilitated by the human resource division and AMWCY partners, that is, The Red Cross, Enda TM, IPC, Plan and UNICEF. Training workshops were centered on HIV/AIDS, first-aid, cartoons, planning and management of national programs, IGAs.
